What is the history of Pitigliano?

Pitigliano is a destination that charms with its blend of history, culture and natural beauty. Whether you are a history buff, a wine lover or simply looking for picturesque landscapes, this Tuscan village has everything to please.
As a bit of history, Pitigliano became a refuge for the Jewish community fleeing Rome around 1555. This community was above all seeking to escape the Catholic authority that weighed upon them.
It was here, in this region of Tuscany, that they found a warm welcome and prospered in this village. From 1598, a synagogue was built, symbolising the harmony between Christians and Jews.
But this period of tolerance came to an end when the Medici family took control of Pitigliano, and the situation of the Jewish community quickly deteriorated. From 1600, after being confined to a specific quarter of the village, the Jewish community was forced to wear distinctive symbols: men had to wear a red hat, while women had to wear a red pin in their hair.
Fortunately, in 1773, under the influence of the liberal Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo, these restrictions were lifted. From 1810, Pitigliano saw a major exodus of Jews, the year in which Jews were finally free to live wherever they wished.
