Guggenheim Bilbao: what to see?
Thinking of going to Bilbao soon? Take the opportunity to visit the Guggenheim museum, one of the city's architectural flagships!

Admire the architecture of the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum
Even before going in, take the time to observe the outside of the museum, a sublime example of 20th-century avant-garde architecture. Its structure made of titanium, stone and glass creates fluid, organic shapes that change in appearance depending on the viewing angle and the reflections of the light. The building's interaction with the water and the green spaces all around, creating one of the most impressive visual spectacles, is also remarkable.
For info, the architect of the Guggenheim Bilbao is Frank Gehry, a Canadian-American architect. In total, it covers 24,000 m², of which 9,000 m² is intended for temporary exhibitions. A bold layout with one of the most innovative designs that architecture lovers and fans of sculptural art will appreciate.

Puppy, the largest floral sculpture in the world

At the entrance to the Guggenheim museum, you'll be greeted by "Puppy", a work by Jeff Koons. For the record, this monumental sculpture of a puppy covered in living flowers symbolises innocence, joy and optimism. Famous in the 1980s, Jeff Koons belongs to that generation of artists inspired by the visual codes of advertising. His work refers to a classic 18th-century European garden: a gigantic West Highland Terrier covered in flowers who is in a way the guardian of the museum.
Maman, a work by Louise Bourgeois

You won't fail to notice this gigantic spider in bronze, steel and marble, entitled "Maman". A must-see work also located outside the Guggenheim museum. What is surprising is the meaning behind it. A sculpture that is both fascinating for some and disturbing for others. It represents the maternal figure, both protective and threatening.

Artwork and sculptures by Richard Serra
Discover the museum's permanent collection, which includes an impressive series of sculptures by Richard Serra. This ensemble entitled "The Matter of Time" includes many massive steel pieces. A way of inviting you to better experience the perception of space and time. To do so, don't hesitate to move through the spirals and curves.
Don't miss admiring Gehry's work as well as the many art collections housed in the Guggenheim museum. An enriching experience that combines art, architecture and culture in an exceptional setting.

Architect of the Guggenheim Bilbao and history of the museum

Inaugurated in 1997, the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum is considered one of Frank Gehry's major works. But above all it was a turning point in the history of modern architecture, as well as transforming this former declining industrial city into a major cultural and tourist destination.
To design the museum, the Canadian-American architect used advanced computer-aided design (CAD) software, which allowed him to create organic and fluid shapes that would be impossible to achieve with other traditional methods.
The museum's façade is made up of titanium plates, glass and also limestone to create a play of textures and reflections. The result is an exceptional spectacle, and the building interacts perfectly with Bilbao's natural and urban environment. After receiving numerous awards and distinctions, including the prestigious Pritzker Prize, Frank Gehry is recognised for his ability to defy conventions.
Today, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao remains one of the most eloquent examples of how architecture can become a catalyst for cultural and economic change.
