What if we say the Water Gardens of Dorne in Game of Thrones? FYI, this historic monument, whose architecture blends Mudéjar and medieval styles, was transformed into the lush residence of House Martell.

The Grotesque Gallery and the Mercury Pond were the emblematic settings for strategic discussions between Doran Martell and Ellaria Sand, while the Baths of Doña María Padilla, with their mystical atmosphere, were the place where Ellaria incites the Sand Snakes to rebel.

The magnificent gardens, adorned with fountains and exotic plants, evoke an enchanting southern kingdom. The Hall of Ambassadors, with its golden details and richly decorated dome, was the setting for the delicate negotiation between Jaime Lannister and the Martells for the return of Myrcella Lannister. Every room of the Real Alcázar, with its colourful tiles and ornate vaults, helped to recreate the splendour of Dorne.

The directors used the palace's unique atmosphere to infuse a touch of mystery and majesty into the series' plots. Today, visitors can explore the salons and gardens of the Real Alcázar, reliving these key moments of Game of Thrones while discovering the rich history of this monument. Visitors marvel at the frescoes, arches and mosaics, imagining themselves alongside their favourite characters, walking the palace corridors or plotting among the lush gardens.

Real Alcázar of Seville: a bit of history

To understand better, we need to talk about the history of Seville, which is closely linked to that of its river, the Guadalquivir. The latter played a key role in the city's political and demographic prosperity at different times. Originally named Ispal by the Iberians, Seville saw the birth of two Roman emperors, Trajan and Hadrian, natives of Italica, a neighbouring city.

With the arrival of the Arabs in 711, the city became Isbiliya, ushering in a new era in its history. It was in the 11th century that construction of the Alcázar of Seville began. Its purpose was to serve as a fortress and Muslim royal residence on the banks of the Guadalquivir.

The palace was modified over time by different monarchs, from the Caliphate of Córdoba to the modern era. Today, scheduling a visit to the Alcázar of Seville is a must during your stay in Andalusia. Besides its architectural beauty, this palace offers a unique glimpse of the various historical events that shaped Spain.
