Visit Lanzarote in 1 week: itinerary tips

Welcome to Lanzarote, the island of volcanic wonders, idyllic beaches and the unique art of César Manrique. With an area of around 845 km2   and breathtaking landscapes, here are the essentials for visiting one of the most beautiful Islas Canarias.

Day 1: Discover the south of Lanzarote and its magnificent beaches

Start this first day by discovering the Papagayo beaches, a postcard setting with turquoise-water coves surrounded by impressive cliffs. For this, take your swimsuit, hat and sunglasses! Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Lanzarote, you will be won over by its almost unspoilt natural setting, ideal for a bit of snorkelling. Immortalise this moment with the peaks of Los Ajaches as a backdrop.

After a relaxing morning of swimming, head to the seaside resort of Playa Blanca for lunch and a stroll along the seafront. A really nice coastal-town atmosphere!

Practical info: Note that access to Papagayo beach is often difficult, as there is no tarmac road. It is therefore tricky for hire cars. The best way is to walk from Playa Blanca (allow about 2 km on foot) or otherwise, go for the relaxing cruise to Papagayo beach.

For the bravest and most motivated: end this first day with an ascent of Montaña Roja (red mountain) to admire the sunset and the panoramic view. A well-deserved hike up a volcanic cone peaking at 198 metres, whose last eruption dates back more than 800,000 years.

Day 2: Visit Timanfaya National Park and its surroundings

A must not to be missed if you come to visit Lanzarote in 7 days or more!

Timanfaya National Park
Timanfaya National Park

On the programme, you will cross Timanfaya National Park by bus, and see the Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verdes (green caves).

Get ready to discover one of the most incredible lunar and arid landscapes! As we know, Lanzarote is nicknamed the island of 300 volcanoes because of this unique site, among others, created precisely by volcanic eruptions. Located in the south-west of the island and surrounded by the Los Volcanes natural park, this park is made up of various Hawaiian-type volcanic cones.

Live an unforgettable experience by visiting Timanfaya National Park on camelback. Then for a lunch break: head to the El Diablo restaurant. Its speciality?  The food is cooked using geothermal heat. An experience not to be missed, and it is also one of the Cesar Manrique attractions.

If you like climbing volcanoes, here are a few hiking ideas in Lanzarote:

  • ‍La Montaña Colorada (1 hour's walk): This volcano with its glowing hues offers a spectacular panorama of the island. A short hike to its summit will let you discover a unique lunar landscape, perfect for nature and photography lovers.
  • The El Cuervo Volcano (2 hours' walk): An unforgettable experience awaits you in the heart of this imposing crater. Set off to discover its paths lined with petrified lava and enjoy an unrivalled view over the valley of the volcanoes.
  • ‍The ascent of Montaña Negra (1 hour's walk return): At the top of this black mountain, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views over the island, its volcanic landscapes and the Atlantic Ocean, offering a moment of calm and raw beauty.

Explore the surroundings by going to explore the green lagoon of Charco Verde with its multicoloured rocks and its black sand beach. You can also go and see the impressive formations of Los Hervideros, one of the most beautiful landscapes in Lanzarote. A lovely walk to appreciate the contrast between the black basalt rocks and the intense blue of the Atlantic. But above all, you will see the sea rage, rushing into the caves and tunnels carved by lava.

Practical info: To observe these natural phenomena up close, paths have been laid out. Another tip: come at high tide!

Late in the afternoon, go and see the Salinas de Janubio, picturesque salt pans.

Nearby is another superb black sand beach, Playa de Janubio.

Day 3: Visit the La Geria region and the north of the island

Start this third day in the La Geria wine region, taste the local wines and learn more about their unique production.

For a visit, we prefer El Grifo, the oldest bodega in Lanzarote with a very nice little museum to visit and a wine tasting of course!

Then continue with a visit to the charming village of Teguise, former capital of the island. You will see pretty white houses and can wander its little lanes.

To end the day, admire the sunset from Famara beach, known for its wild landscapes and incredible surf spots.

Day 4: Discover the art of César Manrique

Visiting Lanzarote also means visiting the famous César Manrique Foundation. Designed by the Spanish artist himself, it will help you understand his influence on the island.

You will be surprised by this house built in harmony with nature, here a lava flow from the eruptions of Lanzarote in the 1730s. Inside, the atmosphere is just as surreal: volcanic bubbles, tunnels, paintings by César Manrique, etc.
The highlight is no doubt this superb pool, like a lagoon where all you want is to take a dip!

Another visit in Lanzarote to plan during your week: LagOmar, a most fascinating architectural complex. Built within a volcanic stone quarry, it was once owned by the actor Omar Sharif. For the little story, he originally came for the filming of the movie “The Mysterious Island”, and then fell in love with this house.

Its particularity? Its architecture integrated into the rock, its tunnels and caves, offers a spectacular labyrinth, once again. By visiting its museum, you will discover its captivating history.

End of the day: admire the view from the Mirador del Río and discover, at the same time, the César Manrique House Museum located in Haría.

Day 5: Set off to discover La Graciosa

Take the ferry from Orzola to explore La Graciosa, a small island north of Lanzarote, where time seems to have stood still. Book your transfer here.

If you choose the cruise, you can also go kayaking and snorkelling. An all-in-one excursion not to be missed! Enjoy its white sand beaches and crystal-clear water. A moment of letting go and relaxation during this week in Lanzarote!

As another option, here is an especially popular excursion if you want to combine the visits into a single day: La Graciosa + LagOmar + the Mirador del Río (transfer included)

At the end of the day, it is time to head back to Lanzarote. If you are staying in Puerto del Carmen, take the opportunity to go to the island's most famous dinner show.

Day 6: Explore the gems of central and northern Lanzarote

For this day, we have planned a great morning hike around the Montaña Cuervo volcano. Located in the Volcanes natural park,  it is a must for all walking enthusiasts and nature lovers.

This volcano has the particularity of an almost perfect cone. Treat yourself to this new experience of walking through lunar landscapes of solidified lava. You can explore both the outside and the inside of the crater, observe lava formations up close and the specific flora that has adapted to this hostile environment.

Don't miss the caves of Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua, natural wonders transformed by Manrique. For information, the Cueva de los Verdes is part of a long lava tunnel created by the eruption of the La Corona volcano. It is one of the main attractions of Lanzarote.

Jameos del Agua ©Andrea Huls Pareja

Jameos del Agua is an underground natural lake, known for being home to a unique species of blind, albino crabs. Cesar Manrique turned this space into a centre of art, culture and tourism. There is also a restaurant, gardens, a pool, and an auditorium.

At the end of the day, take the opportunity to stroll through the village of Punta Mujeres and enjoy its sublime natural pools.

Day 7 :  Visit Arrecife, between sun and relaxation

The last day of our “visit Lanzarote in 1 week” programme! To end the stay, we take you to discover Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote since the 19th century. It is known for its fortress, the Castillo de San Gabriel, and its museum.

A chance for you to bring back a few souvenirs from the island and enjoy the local gastronomy. It is also time to plan a bit of rest before going home. Swimming, sunbathing on the beach, reading by the pool, we let you choose!

Some places, like the Marina Rubicón in Playa Blanca, organise night markets where it is nice to stroll and enjoy the atmosphere.

Go for a drink or party in Puerto del Carmen

Want to go out in the evening?  Puerto del Carmen is the perfect destination! Here are 5 good addresses to note:

Stargazing in Lanzarote

Lanzarote has areas with little light pollution, which are therefore ideal for stargazing. So where to watch the stars in Lanzarote? We recommend the Peñas del Cache viewpoint located north of Haría.

Where to sleep in Lanzarote for 7 days?

Hotel Lanzarote

Hotel Lanzarote Playa Blanca

Staying in this family seaside resort is an excellent idea for visiting Lanzarote in 1 week.  You will be close to the most beautiful beaches, such as those of Papagayo, and close to Timanfaya National Park.

Here is a suggestion of the 3 best hotels in Playa Blanca:

Sleeping in Puerto del Carmen

Ideal for those who want to go out in the evening while staying close to the beaches and other tourist activities. You will have plenty of bars, restaurants and nightclubs in the town centre.

Staying in Costa Teguise

A perfect choice for families and water sports fans. You will be close, for example, to the Costa Teguise Aquapark, and also to Las Cucharas beach. Located on the east coast of the island, it is a very pleasant seaside resort for a holiday in Lanzarote.

Choosing Arrecife to visit Lanzarote in 1 week or Puerto Calero

Opt for a hotel in the island's capital, a charming port town with a traditional atmosphere.

In Puerto Calero, we recommend this sublime hotel: the Royal Marina Suites Boutique Hotel. This marina offers several upscale hotel choices as well as very good restaurants.

Visit Lanzarote in 1 week: what budget and means of transport?

Here are a few tips for your stay on this Canary island.

Estimated budget for 7 days in Lanzarote

Here is an estimate to help you plan your budget:

  • Accommodation: Prices vary from 50 to 200 EUR per night depending on the type of accommodation. 3-star hotels cost on average 80-100 EUR per night.
  • Meals: Expect to spend between 10 and 25 EUR per meal in local restaurants. Obviously, you will need a different budget if you plan on upscale restaurants.
  • Activities in Lanzarote: Visits to museums or sites such as Timanfaya or Cueva de los Verdes cost about 10-20 EUR per entry. Boat or bike excursions can range from 30 to 70 EUR per person.
  • Car hire: Allow about 25-40 EUR per day for a standard hire car.

Visit Lanzarote by car or scooter

If you are staying on the island, we strongly recommend hiring a car to have more flexibility. Above all, it will let you get around at your own pace and reach sites that are not always accessible by bus more easily. This is the case in particular for isolated beaches. A way to make the most of your time on the island if you are only staying a few days in Lanzarote.

For information, it is perfectly possible to take a car on a ferry to Lanzarote. Several shipping companies operate crossings between the Canary Islands, and will let you take your vehicle on board these ferries. To answer the question "how long does it take to cross Lanzarote by car?", know that it takes a little over an hour to go from Playa Blanca, in the south-west, to the northern tip of the island at the village of Orzola, located in the municipality of Haría.

Visit Lanzarote by bus (local guaguas)

Visiting Lanzarote without a car is possible! However, you can get around by bus to visit the island's main attractions. Ideal for getting around without having to worry about driving or parking.

Let's talk gastronomy in Lanzarote

Lanzarote offers a rich cuisine, influenced by its local produce. Here are a few typical dishes to try if you come for 1 week in Lanzarote:

  • Papas arrugadas: Potatoes cooked in their skins, served with mojo sauce.
  • Fresh fish: Fish such as sancocho (salt cod) are popular, as are local seafood.
  • Lanzarote wines: Visit the vineyards of La Geria to taste unique local wines produced in volcanic conditions.

FAQ Visit Lanzarote in 7 days or more

Here is some practical information to help you during your stay on the island:

What is the most beautiful part of Lanzarote?

Many travellers consider Timanfaya National Park with its lunar landscapes to be the most impressive. The kind of landscape you won't see everywhere. Otherwise, the La Geria region with its unique vineyards, in the north of the island, is also much appreciated.

Which village to visit in Lanzarote?

If you come to visit Lanzarote in a week, we recommend two not to be missed:  Haría, in the Valley of a Thousand Palms, and Teguise, the former capital of the island. Go on a Sunday, which will let you immerse yourself in its traditional market.

Where to see a beautiful sunset in Lanzarote?

Without the slightest hesitation, we recommend going to the Mirador del Río.  You can admire a spectacular view over the ocean and the neighbouring islands, but it is THE spot for watching the sunset.

How to discover Lanzarote?

As seen earlier, the best way is to explore the island by car, as it is the best way to feel free on holiday. You will be more flexible in adapting your itinerary to your wishes.

How to visit the Timanfaya volcano?

Know that Timanfaya National Park can be visited on a bus tour called the "Ruta de los Volcanes". Visiting the park on foot is limited, so you must book in advance. Book your hike here to visit the volcano with a guide.

See all the activities to do at Timanfaya National Park here.

What is the most beautiful Canary island?

It is hard to answer this question, as it depends on everyone's tastes and wishes. As we know, Lanzarote is renowned for its unique volcanic landscapes. It is an excellent destination for coming to the Canary archipelago for the first time.  Nevertheless, many travellers are torn with Tenerife, appreciated for its diversity and the famous Teide, considered the highest mountain in Spain.

What is the difference between Lanzarote and Tenerife?

Tenerife is a Canary island that is larger than Lanzarote. The landscapes are completely different. In Tenerife you will find beaches, but also mountains and forests; Lanzarote, smaller, is known for its art and unique architecture. The big difference lies in its volcanic landscapes that you don't see anywhere else, which is why NASA regularly comes there to get into the right conditions and carry out experiments.

How to climb the Lanzarote volcano?

Know that most volcanoes in Lanzarote cannot under any circumstances be freely climbed, purely for conservation reasons. However, you will be able to approach the base of some volcanoes and walk on paths laid out for the purpose.

What is the best time to go to Lanzarote?

The island of Lanzarote enjoys a pleasant climate all year round. It is called the island of eternal spring ! The months from May to October offer warmer weather and less wind, with September and October probably being the best months to come to Lanzarote. If you have small children, avoid July, as it is generally the windiest month. If you have no choice, opt for the south of the island, which is the most sheltered from the wind.

Coming in winter is also an excellent idea, especially for those who want to see the sun and escape the cold.

How to dress in Lanzarote right now?

Temperatures in Lanzarote are generally mild all year round. Pack light clothes for the day and a light jumper for the evenings, especially if you are near the coast. Don't forget to put a hat, sunglasses and of course sun cream in your suitcase.

Our article “Visit Lanzarote in 1 week” ends here. We hope all these activities will help you plan your stay in Spain in the Canaries. All that's left is to wish you a great trip and plenty of good vibes 😎
